How to keep the hold

Nylon and spandex hold their shape because the spandex filament snaps back. Heat is what stops it snapping back, and every compression garment that has gone slack was killed by a dryer, an iron or a radiator rather than by a wash.

The label wins

The Care Labeling Rule requires manufacturers and importers to attach care instructions to clothing and some piece goods.

That rule is the reason your garment has a label at all. Whatever is printed on that small piece of tape outranks anything written here, including everything in the next paragraph.

What works on this knit

• Cold water, gentle cycle, inside out. Warm water is where the damage starts.
• No fabric softener. It coats elastane and the coating is what makes a panel feel dead.
• Flat or hanging to dry, out of the sun. A dryer on low is still a dryer.
• No iron, ever, and no radiator. Heat is the whole enemy.
• Wash after each wearing if it has been under a shirt all day. Body oil does the second most damage after heat.

How long a piece actually lasts

We cannot give you a number of washes, and any brand that does is guessing. What buyers report across this range is that a single-layer tank starts to feel softer somewhere in the first year of regular wear, and that a doubled panel outlasts it because there is more knit doing the work.

The one about sweat bands

Neoprene trimmers need rinsing rather than washing, and they need drying open rather than folded. They also attract a claim we will not make. The Federal Trade Commission wrote a guide for editors on spotting false weight loss claims, and it names this product class directly.
